Parkinson’s disease

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition where parts of the brain become progressively damaged over time.

Symptoms

According to the NHS the three main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body (often referred to as tremors), slow movement, and stiff and inflexible muscles. Many people who have Parkinson’s disease also experience a wide range of other physical and psychological issues including depression and anxiety, balance problems, loss of the sense of smell (anosmia), problems sleeping (insomnia), and memory problems.

Research suggests that around 1 in 500 people are affected by Parkinson’s disease. While most people with Parkinson’s start to develop symptoms when they’ve over 50, some (around 1 in 20) first experience symptoms when they are under 40.

The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can make it difficult to manage zips and buttons.
